SSM does more than check exact duplicates
For incorporation or change of name, availability must be confirmed by the Registrar. A name generally must not be undesirable, identical to an existing or reserved name, or a type of name that the Minister has directed the Registrar not to accept.
What is checked
- Whether it is identical or too close to an existing entity
- Whether it is already reserved
- Whether it contains sensitive or controlled words
What is considered
- Whether it may mislead the public
- Whether it implies government, royal, financial, education or professional status
- Whether it offends public policy, religion or the public

Names with better approval chances usually follow these principles
A coined or unique brand word such as VSG, Nexora or Brightlane is usually more distinguishable than “International Tradingâ€.
Malay and English can be mixed to describe the business, but the wording should follow proper grammar.
Words like Technology, Marketing, Services or Trading may be useful, but do not imply a regulated licence or government connection.
If you use non-Malay/non-English words or created words, SSM may ask for the meaning.

Names that commonly create issues
Too general
Names such as Beautiful, International Trading or broad place-based names may lack distinctiveness.
Misleading
A name that suggests the company is a bank, insurer, university, government body, foundation, association or professional body is higher risk.
Sensitive or offensive
Obscene, religiously sensitive, offensive or public-policy-related names may be refused at the Registrar's discretion.

Why adding “Malaysia†or “Group†may not be enough
When determining whether names are identical, SSM may disregard words such as The, Sdn. Bhd., Berhad, PLT, Company, Co, Holding, Group, Malaysia, (M), Msia, Consortium and Consolidated. Letter case, spacing, punctuation, plural forms and root words may also be treated as insufficient difference.
Zip Legacy Malaysia
If Zip Legacy already exists, adding Malaysia, (M), MY or Msia at the end may not distinguish the name.
Close group names
If a proposed name is close to an existing company or PLT, a consent letter may be needed, subject to SSM's decision.
Trade / Trading / Trader
Words such as Consultancy / Consultants and Technology / Tech may be viewed as having the same root meaning.

Be careful with sensitive and controlled words
Some words suggest a regulated industry, government link, professional status or statutory field. They may require approval or supporting documents from the relevant referral authority.
Bank / Finance / Insurance
Bank, Finance, Insurance, Forex, Money Changer and Remittance may involve Bank Negara Malaysia.
Clinic / Medical / Pharmacy
Hospital, Clinic, Dental, Pharmacy, Optic and Traditional Medicine may involve KKM.
Accounting / Tax / Auditor
Accountant, Accounting, Auditor, Tax Consultant and Tax Advisor may involve MIA.
Architect / Engineer
Architect, Interior Design, Engineer and Jurutera may require professional-body support.
School / College / University
School, Tadika, College, Institute and University may involve MOE or MOHE.
Halal / Islam / Masjid
Halal, Islam, Masjid, Wasiat and Faraid may involve religious or referral authority considerations.
Avoid government, royal and international-organisation implications
Royal, King, Queen, Federal, State, National, ASEAN, UNESCO, NATO and OPEC may suggest a connection that needs justification or may not be acceptable.

Brand word + industry
Nexora Digital Sdn. Bhd. or Brightlane Consulting Sdn. Bhd.
Brand word + Services
Vistara Services Sdn. Bhd. or Avenix Solutions Sdn. Bhd.
Avoid controlled words
If you do not have the relevant licence or professional status, avoid Bank, University, Clinic, Architect, Engineer and Tax.

Name reservation, change of name and forced change
SSM may reserve an available name for 30 days from lodgement upon payment of the prescribed fee, or for a longer period allowed by the Registrar. The Registrar may also direct a company to change its name if the name should not have been registered.
Usually reserved for 30 days from lodgement.
A new proposed name still needs availability confirmation.
After receiving a notice, the company generally has 60 days or another allowed period to comply.
An appeal to the Minister may be made within 30 days from the Registrar's decision with reasons and a RM300 fee.

What VSG checks before name submission
List them in order of preference and explain any special meaning.
Tell us what the company actually does and whether licences, finance, education, healthcare or professional services are involved.
If an individual's name is used, it should generally relate to the director or director's family and may require proof.
SSM name approval is not the same as trademark protection. Consider trademark checks if the brand is important.
